History: It was first mined (in Afghanistan) 6000 years ago. The Egyptians used Lapis for seals, cosmetic purposes and often carved it into vases and figurines. Lapis lazuli a much sought after gem stone in the ancient world was highly prized by the Sumerians. It was at times reserved for royalty, and many cultures believed it had a religious significance. Lapis lazuli amulets were worn for protection of health, a practice that persists today in some areas. The Sumerians, in their quest for the precious blue stone, established difficult overland trade routes to the mountains of Afghanistan and back to their cities where the rare stone was made into beads amulets and cylinder seals.

The gemstone beads and pendants we use are all natural. People who love natural stone jewelry accept and relish the fact that natural stone is not a sterile gem quality, but shows the variations and adverse climatic conditions under which it was created. In any natural stone there will be imperfections if viewed from a gemstone mindset. Natural stone is beautiful and unique because of its often rough or scarred appearance.
